US Navy nuclear engineer Jonathan Toby was in possession of top-secret security documents. He and his wife, Diana, were arrested Saturday in West Virginia by the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The arrest came shortly after they wanted to sell information regarding a US nuclear-powered warship project.

The Justice Department confirmed that Toby obtained information on naval nuclear propulsion and critical elements of military design, including operating parameters and reactor performance characteristics for nuclear-powered warships.

The Washington Post was the first to report on the alleged espionage plot. According to the results of the investigation, the man for the first time sent a letter to a foreign government in April 2020, in which he offered to sell nuclear secrets, and the communication was via an encrypted e-mail program.
