The United States is calling for the World Health Organization to conduct a second-stage investigation into the origin of the Coronavirus. The US mission to the United Nations stressed that independent experts should have full access to data and original samples in China.

“It is extremely important for China to provide independent experts with full access to all original data and samples relevant to understanding the source of the virus and the early stages of the epidemic,” the US mission to the United Nations in Geneva said in a statement.

On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden asked US intelligence agencies to “redouble their efforts” to investigate the origins of the Coronavirus, including the theory that the path leads to a Chinese laboratory. The US leader is pressing China to cooperate on this issue.

Biden said his country will continue to “work with partners around the world to pressure China to participate in a full, transparent and evidence-based international investigation and provide access to all relevant data and evidence.”

The World Health Organization mission in Wuhan

The US administration has expressed doubts about whether the Chinese authorities have left the first international expert mission under the auspices of the World Health Organization in Wuhan free enough to be able to conduct their investigations effectively.

After visiting Wuhan in January and February, members of this mission considered the most likely hypothesis that the pathogen was transmitted to humans from a natural source. On the other hand, they evaluated the hypothesis of the virus leaking from the laboratory as “highly unlikely”.
