A warehouse at mechanical engineering company Reifenhäuser in Troisdorf-Sieglar caught fire on Monday. As Fire Brigade spokesperson Peter Kern stated when asked by the General Assembly, plastic pellets caught fire there. The smoke was strong in return. In the afternoon, a plume of smoke over Sieglar was clearly visible not only from Troisdorf, but also from other parts of the Rhein-Sieg region on the right bank of the Rhine.
Firefighters were called to the fire shortly before 3 p.m., and deployed with a total of 140 emergency services. As Peter Kern mentioned, the emergency services were able to get the fire under control relatively quickly. In the late afternoon, only subsequent firefighting work was still going on. No one was hurt by the fire.
The cause of the fire is still unclear and the subject of investigation. According to Kern, the hall was just a warehouse that was used, among other things, to store plastic pellets. Reifenhäuser was unable to provide any information on Monday about the extent of property damage.
The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance initially warned of potential health risks in the afternoon due to the spread of thick smoke. The City of Siegburg has also indicated that people in the entire metropolitan area of Troisdorf and Siegburg as well as in the Sankt Augustin districts of Menden and Meindorf should keep windows and doors closed. However, the warning was lifted around 5 pm. According to the firefighting team, no harmful pollutants were found in the first measurements.
