In his groundbreaking 2015 book, Ferguson added: “There is a football agent or two that I don’t like, and Mino Raiola, Paul Pogba’s agent, is one of them.

“I hadn’t trusted him from the moment I met him. He became Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s agent while he played for Ajax, and eventually he would end up acting as Pogba, who was only 18 years old at the time.

“We had Paul on a three-year contract, and he had a one-year renewal option that we were excited to sign. But Raiola suddenly appeared on the scene and our first meeting was a complete failure.

“He and I were like oil and water. Since then, our goose has been cooked because Raiola was able to communicate with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.”

Mourinho took over as United manager in 2016 and re-signed Pogba from Juventus.

Pogba left Manchester United for Juventus

The Red Devils paid a club record 89 million pounds to bring the French player back home, but the transfer would be a big problem for Mourinho.

The Portuguese routinely clashed with Pogba, but, like Ferguson, they believed that the French’s entourage – specifically Raiola – was responsible for his behavior.

Mourinho spoke of Pogba again in 2018 after being given the captain’s armband first and then taking it again, after the French player had criticized his tactics in the press.

Mourinho made it clear that he would make all the decisions related to Pogba, not his agent. “The only truth is that I made Paul’s decision not to be the captain of the second team anymore. But there are no problems. There are no problems at all,” he said.

“ The same person who decided Paul was not second commander anymore is exactly the same person who decided Paul was the second leader, me.

Pogba re-signed with Manchester United in 2016

“I am the manager, I can make these decisions, with no problems whatsoever, no problems whatsoever, just one decision that I don’t have to explain.”

Mourinho later explained: “Paul was not the deputy captain [Antonio] Valencia as captain then we have a group of players who can be deputy captain.

“One day I was given to David De Gea, Ashley Young, and Chris Smalling. I actually thought of Paul last season because a player of a different generation, a younger player and a future captain because Valencia, Young are almost the same age as the same generation.

“Paul was not the deputy captain. We do not have the deputy captain. It depends on the game, it depends on whether Valencia is playing. If Valencia is playing then he is the captain. If Valencia does not play then I will try to go in another direction.”
