The woman from Witsla recalls: “He would write to me every day: how to do, what to do, whether we wanted to meet, whether to take me in the car.”

“He was friendly, so I answered him kindly. I was sorry. He seemed to have no friends. I thought he was having a midlife crisis, but not because he was a rapist,” Sophie says. Eye-catching to Sophie: “He spoke very slowly and looked as if he was looking into your soul, a kind of psychological look.”

P. may seem “strange” to her and her friends: “We saw him in real life quite often, then pushed an almost empty shopping cart in front of him. Sometimes he would sit on a bench and eat ice cream for hours. We tried to avoid him, but we still bumped into him from time to time” .

At the end of May, Sophie received a strange voice message from P: “He should delete me from Snapchat because I’m such a nice person, and I’d better delete me now. Looking back, I interpret this to mean that he might have been looking for victims in the beginning. Maybe. He finally found me kind and felt sorry for me. Perhaps he realized that I was respecting him as a person and saw me as his companion.”

Sophie went to the police with her mother to pass on the information: “Even if Jan didn’t do anything to me, it would be appropriate to know how many girls he approached or dragged away in this way. But I don’t think the officials were really interested. They didn’t even want to see the screenshots ” .
