As reported by Tokyo, the joint exercises were aimed at confirming the capabilities of the two armies’ combined forces and further strengthening the Japan-US alliance.

The exercises were carried out a few hours after North Korea launched three missiles, including an ICBM, into the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. The missiles landed in waters outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The Japanese-US exercises came in response to recent Russian-Chinese maneuvers during US President Joe Biden’s stay in Tokyo, the Associated Press reported.

Russian and Chinese military aircraft approached Japanese airspace on Tuesday during the strategic summit of the quadripartite alliance, which is jointly created by India and China, as well as the United States. Japanese fighters were selected in response.
