The Montefero Historic District is the center of the element that consumes the western part of the island. Since July 23, the flames have moved 50 kilometers with strong winds.

In Sardinia, there is a great mobilization in the fight against fires day and night, with teams of firefighters, forest rangers, civil defense and volunteers from all possible sides. The fleet of firefighting aircraft was supplemented by two machines sent from France and Greece with the help of the European Union.

Firefighting is concentrated, among other things, in the Santo Lusorgio and Sony region.

In some settlements, the situation is already under control. Many evacuees in Cuglieri, Santo Lossurgio, Porto Albi and Senariolo were able to return to their homes to start counting the losses. They are huge.

“This is a tragedy for our community and our territory, an unprecedented disaster,” said Cuglieri Mayor, Gianni Panicchi.

– It is difficult to find the right words to describe the terrible scale of this tragedy, but the country is there and no one will be left alone – Oristano Provincial Governor Fabrizio Stilo confirmed during his visit to the stricken area.

Aid and fundraising initiatives have been launched to help residents. They were joined by the local diocese of Alghero Bossa.
