The previous edition of the ATP Tour in Winston-Salem, two years ago (the event did not take place 12 months earlier due to the coronavirus pandemic), is unforgettable for Polish fans. Hubert Hurkacz then won the title and became the first representative of our country with the ATP Tour Trophy in one since 1982 and the victory of Wojciech Vibak in Chicago.
However, Hurkacz has not decided to defend the title and will miss Winston Salem this year. Who will inherit the pole? The most dangerous candidates advanced at the last minute and will play in the tournament thanks to passes from the organisers.
The top three ranked participants in the 2021 Winston Salem received wild cards. They are Pablo Carino (ATP 12), David Goffin (ATP 19) and Daniel Evans (ATP 28).

But the biggest star of the tournament will be Andy Murray (ATP 105). The Briton, three-time Grand Slam champion and former ATP leader, hesitated about his performance as Winston Salem, but eventually demanded a wild card. And it won’t be easy. In the first round, he found Nick Kyrgios (ATP 81), and the winner of this match in the second round will face the 13th seed Francis Tiafoe (ATP 51).
Winston Salem will also play among others Marton Fucsovics (ATP 37), Aleksander Bublik (ATP 38), Marin Cilić (ATP 49), Benoit Paire (ATP 50), Richard Gasquet (ATP 53) and talented teens – Carlos Alcaraz (ATP 55) and Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 62)).
In doubles the highest rating was Łukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo. In the first round, the Polish and the Brazilian found wild card holders – Sedant Panthea from India and American Matthew Thompson. Should they win, they will play Uruguayan Ecuadorean duo Ariel Behar/Gonzalo Escobar or British brothers Kane and Neil Skopsky in the quarter-finals.
The 2021 Winston-Salem Open will take place from August 23-28 and will be the last test of tennis players’ level before the US Grand Prix (August 30 – September 12). The winner will get 250 points in the ATP rating and more than 96.5 thousand. dollar
