The previous world record of 46.78 had a “long beard” as set in 1992 by Kevin Young. Everything happened on the Olympic arena in Barcelona, where the American won the gold medal.
Warholm’s result was astonishing as it was only the 25-year-old’s first start to the season.
So far, in the history of athletics, only four athletes have managed to run less than 47 seconds at this distance.
Warholm is the two-time world champion over the crown in 2017 and 2019. He also held the titles of Old Continental Champion on the Open Court and in the Hall (400m flat) in 2018 and 2019.
On Thursday evening, the Norwegian athlete sent a strong signal to all the competitors: I am the main contender for the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
For one of his first international successes, the Norwegian reached the European Youth Championships held in Bydgoszcz in 2017. He won gold with hurdles and a silver in the 400m “flat”.
