Coronavirus deaths associated with hospital outbreaks rose to 13
So far, 13 people have died from the Coronavirus in a hospital in South Wales where 94 cases have been linked to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant has already stopped its planned surgeries and its Health Board decided to open a field hospital next week to transfer patients who are not suffering from Covid.
Emergency admissions, except for children and patients of the Welsh Ambulance Service, are referred to other hospitals.
On Friday, Cwm University Health Board Taf Morgannwg announced that the reopening of the hospital’s Tyrion birthing center – scheduled for October 5 – had been postponed.
A spokeswoman said several options had been explored, with risk assessments being conducted, but that it was not possible to “reopen safely” at this time.
Professor Kelechi Nnoaham, Director of Public Health at Cwm University Health Board Taf Morgannwg said: “Temporary restrictions on services at Royal Glamorgan Hospital will remain in effect until we are absolutely sure that the spread of the virus on the site is contained.
“The opening of the field hospital next week will create capacity in the hospital for patients who need more specialized care, and enable others to move to a COVID-free environment. Together with Public Health Wales, we are constantly reviewing the situation and acknowledging the significant impact of our decisions on our patients, our communities and our staff.
“We thank everyone for working with us at this difficult time. The safety of our patients and staff in all of our locations remains our top priority and we remain grateful to all members of our community who continue to adhere to guidelines in order to help control the spread of this virus.”
