The first generation Google Pixel smartphones were powered by Qualcomm processors. However, the latest models with the name “six” are based on the proprietary Google Tensor system, which was prepared in cooperation with Samsung. Why did the giant decide to abandon the popular and proven Snapdragon? In short, the new SoCs are optimized for machine learning and in some cases speed up existing functionality or enable things that couldn’t be done before. While Tensors lags the competition in some ways, it appears Google won’t be returning to off-the-shelf third-party processors.
While there is nothing to worry about the new Tensors functionality, the manufacturer certainly has a lot to improve performance. Recent tests have shown computing power at the level of the Apple A12 chip.
Google Tensor is the key to photography in Google Pixel 6 smartphones. The manufacturer explains the operation of the system
It has been discovered that in the Google Pixel 6 smartphone applications many references to the name “Cloudripper” are found, which probably does not mean the codename for next year’s Pixels, but suggests a motherboard for other devices (for example, for this year’s models which depends on the motherboard “Slider”). Moreover, it has been discovered that Cloudripper will work with chips bearing the designation GS201. Found in recent Android changes, they clearly refer to more Tensors – after all, GS101 stands for the chips in the Pixels 6.
Google Tensor turns out to be slower than the three-year-old Apple A12 Bionic chip than the iPhone XS Max smartphone
Unfortunately, the sources have not revealed any details about the specifications of the new Tensors. Another thing is that it’s too early to predict its features – after all, the Pixels 6 came out. On the Pixele 7 we’ll have to wait probably a year. Although there is nothing to worry about the functionality of the new systems, the manufacturer certainly has a lot to improve in terms of performance, as recent tests have shown computing power at the level of the Apple A12 chip. On the other hand, according to previous reports, in practice, the new pixels turned out to be fast enough for smooth operation.
