Wout van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma) became the fourth stage winner of the Tour of Britain. The Belgian beat Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) in the last metres. He also became the new leader of the race.
It was the fourth leg of the Tour of Britain, which is 210 km long and mountainous. The riders left Aberaeron and headed north towards Llandudno. Four mountain bounties were waiting for them on the way. These were the following altitudes: Bwlch Llyn Bach (2.9 km, 6%), Bir Al-Aida (9.5 km, 4.6%), Marine Drive (1.2 km, 6%) and the Great Orme (1.9 km, 9.2%), at the top of which was end line.
Escape of the Day was created by six cyclists today. They were: Jokin Murguialday (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Robert Donaldson (UK), Nicholas Sessler (Global 6 cycling), Jacob Scott (Canyon dhb SunGod), Gruffudd Lewis (Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling) and Olly Pickover (SwiftCarbon Pro riding) bicycles)). Sixty kilometers before the finish line, after the peloton attack, they were joined by: Thomas Gloag (Trinity Racing), Ben Healy (Trinity Racing) and Marc Soler (Movistar Team). However, their advantage was several tens of seconds.
The following kilometers brought many changes to the lead. We have seen many attacks from the peloton, but all attempts were quickly neutralized. The reduced peloton reached the final climb. On the steep climb, three broke away from the main group: Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Wout van Aert (Team Jumbo-Visma) and Michael Woods (Israel Start-Up Nation). In the last kilometer, they were joined by: Mikkel Frolich Honore (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and race leader Ethan Hayter (INEOS Grenadiers). However, the ending was marked by a fight between Alaphilipp and van Aert. The Belgian emerged victorious from this duel. He also became the new leader of the race.
