European energy companies Gascade, Gasunie, RWE and Shell have signed a declaration of their intention to intensify cooperation on the AquaDuctus project. This is a pipeline that will be used to transport green hydrogen produced from offshore wind farms off the coast of Great Britain.

The AquaDuctus pipeline will transport green hydrogen from the North Sea directly to the mainland. This is part of the AquaVentus initiative to install 10 GW of capacity in the electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen from offshore wind farms. Offshore wind farms are already under construction in Dogger Bank, a North Sea bank extending from the coast of Great Britain to the Jutland Peninsula. The pipeline will extend from this bank to the island of Heligoland, off the coast of Germany. The pipeline is expected to transport 1 million tons of green hydrogen annually, and the project is expected to continue from 2035.

The AquaDuctus pipeline is Germany’s first offshore offshore hydropower vision. Compared with the transmission of electricity generated abroad, the pipeline is expected to be more cost-effective. Otherwise, five submarine cable (HVDC) would have to be built in place of this installation.

The first step in the AquaDuctus project is to conduct a detailed feasibility study. AquaDuctus has also participated in the IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) Process of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.
