Stefan Bab, who passed away on March 23, 2020, was an outstanding innovator of culture. It deals with the methodology of space formation and art theory and criticism, as well as cultural journalism and poetry. He was a painter, sculptor, draftsman, and satirical painter.
Stephan Bab was born on April 10, 1932 in Chernivtsi. He comes from the Bohosiewicz Armenian family. He was the grandson of Maria Bohosiewicz, the owner of a manor house in Baniłów.
In 1947 he came from Romania to Poland. He attended Snycers High School in Cieplice, State High School of Fine Arts in Zakopane and State Staff High School of Jelenia Góra, having passed his high school leaving exam in 1952.
He linked his life with Krakow. In 1958 he graduated from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in the professor’s studio. Xawery Dunikowski and Professor. Wanda Ślędzińska. It deals with sculpture, graphics, artistic drawing, methodology of forming social space, and art criticism.
Publish magazines at a time when codified paper was not easy to come by. He was the creator of the magazine “Czarno na biały”, founded in 1957 on the wave of melting, and named “Zebra” from the second issue. A periodical print, among others Chisaw Mitoch, Marian Pankowski, Witgombrowicz and Halina Powatzka were published in less than a year and a half. Later, Bab founded a magazine dedicated to artistic life, “Sezon”. For many years he collaborated with “Dziennik Polski”, “Szpilki”, “Architektura”, “Magazyn Kulturalny” and “Sztuka”. From the 1960s to the 1980s, he was the graphic editor at Tygodnik Powszechny.
In the 1960s, he began publishing satirical texts and drawings on Wei. There he met Tadeusz Mazwiecki. When Mazowiecki ran for the presidential election in the fall of 1990, he supported the campaign door with his drawings from the series “Pan Tadeusz and the Polish case”. “In a series of satirical cartoons, I decided to display his qualities to a true statesman: his wisdom, sense of responsibility, patriotism and openness to Europe – against the backdrop of the extremely complex economic, social and political situation in Poland, in the first period of transformation” – that characterized his works.
In the years 1979-2001 he lectured in the design and architecture departments of the Fachhochschule in Münster. In 1996 he defended his doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture at the Krakow University of Technology. In 2002, he held the Chopin Park Area Design Seminar at the School of Architecture of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice.
Deal with sculpture, collage, drawings, satirical objects, drawing, art drawing, and motion art. Poetry, cultural and social journalism, theory and criticism of art, methodology and implementation of the formation of social space and the theory of perception of the environment. In the field of satirical painting, he turned out to be an innovative one that could be compared to such artists as Eryk Lipiński, Zbigniew Lengren, Szymon Kobyliński, Jerzy Flisak, Andrzej Czeczot and Zbigniew Jujka.
