Eddie Isard adopted the pronouns “she” and “she” saying that she wanted “to be in girl’s status from now on.”
The actress and comedian made the announcement during her appearance in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist Of The Year series last week in which she described herself as being a gender liquid, prompting LGBT charity Stonewall to praise her for her courage.
Izzard said this is the first time she has asked to be referred to by her conscience only while preparing a TV show and “It feels great,” adding: “One life, live it well.”
Izzard, 58, has previously talked about her changing gender identity and styles. Earlier in her career, she introduced her to a transsexual, saying that she felt like a “full boy plus half girl” and referring to herself as “a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.”
In 2017, she told The Hollywood Reporter, “I’m basically transgender. I have boy status and girl status. I really feel like I have boy genetics and girls genetics.”
Izzard has been known for decades for her fashion and style on stage and television, saying, “It’s not women’s clothes. It’s my clothes. I bought them.”
Stonewall said Monday that Izzard’s openness will have an impact on transgender communities around the world.
Ruby de Santos, Associate Director of Communications and Campaigns at the charity, told PA Media: “We are delighted that Eddie is able to courageously share her truth with the world.
“Being open about using different pronouns is often very difficult, especially in the public eye – its courageous decision will mean a lot to transgender and transgender societies around the world.”
Comedian Shabee Khorsandi also praised Izzard, tweeting Sunday: “I see Eddie Izzard heading. I can’t tell you what you mean to me as a comedian.
“My comedy world shook up when I was a teenager and beyond. Everything changed, and it made way. I love her and this morning I’m very happy for her.”
