Scientists from Brazil, associated with many academic centers of this country, discovered fossils of an ancient forest in its southern part. Researchers estimate its age at about 290 million years.

Tami Mutin from the Department of Geology at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR) reports that the discovery occurred in the town of Ortigueira, Paraná state.

The local newspaper Correio do Povo do Parana, citing the research team, indicated that this discovery is the third in South America, and that the forest found is in the best condition.

She explained that so far, similar fossils have been found from ancient forests in Argentine Patagonia and the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Mutin noted that this find is unique not only in the case of a good find, but also in the fact that the Petrified Forest has been preserved erect in the rocks.

According to the analysis by the team led by Moten, the extinction of the forest was due to a flood, possibly the flooding of a nearby river containing large amounts of mud.

– I never imagined that I would find something so important (…) not only for our country, but for the entire southern hemisphere – concluded the Brazilian researcher.
